Logbook Servicing vs Dealer Servicing — What's the Difference?

One of the most persistent myths in Australian motoring is that you must return to an authorised dealer for logbook servicing to keep your new car warranty valid. This is false, and has been false since the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) clarified the position under the Australian Consumer Law in 2010.

What the Law Actually Says

Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because you chose to have your vehicle serviced by an independent mechanic — provided that:

1. The service is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications

2. Genuine or equivalent-quality parts are used

3. The service is properly documented in the logbook

This means that as long as your independent mechanic follows BMW's, Mercedes-Benz's, or Audi's service schedule and uses appropriate parts, your new car warranty remains fully intact.

What is a Logbook Service?

A logbook service is simply a service performed in accordance with the manufacturer's specified schedule — the intervals, fluid specifications, and component checks outlined in your vehicle's service logbook. The logbook is stamped and signed by the servicing workshop upon completion.

At Hawthorn Eurotech, every logbook service includes:

  • Oil and filter change using manufacturer-specified fluid grade
  • All fluid level checks and top-ups
  • Brake pad and rotor inspection
  • Tyre pressure and condition check
  • All items specified in the manufacturer's service schedule for that interval
  • Digital and physical logbook stamp
  • Why Choose an Independent European Specialist Over a Dealer?

What About Cars Still Under New Car Warranty?

For vehicles still within their new car warranty period, the same rules apply. Your warranty cannot be voided by using an independent mechanic who performs the service to manufacturer specifications. If a dealer ever tells you otherwise, they are misrepresenting your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

The only exception is if a manufacturer offers a free scheduled servicing program (such as Mercedes-Benz's Service Care or BMW's Service Inclusive) — in these cases, you would need to use the dealer's network to claim the free service, but you are still free to use an independent mechanic and simply forgo the free service.
