Mercedes-AMG Servicing in Melbourne — What You Need to Know

Mercedes-AMG vehicles are hand-built performance machines. Each AMG engine is assembled by a single technician — a fact commemorated by the signature plaque on every AMG engine. With that level of engineering comes specific service requirements that standard Mercedes-Benz service intervals don't fully address.

AMG-Specific Service Considerations

Engine Oil — More Frequent Changes Are Essential

AMG's high-revving, high-output engines — whether the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo (M177/M178) in the C63, E63, and G63, or the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (M139) in the A45 and CLA45 — operate at significantly higher temperatures and stresses than standard Mercedes engines.

While Mercedes-Benz's ASSYST service system may indicate oil changes at up to 25,000 km, we strongly recommend AMG owners change their oil every 8,000–10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. The cost of an oil change is trivial compared to the cost of engine damage from degraded oil.

Approved oil specification: Mercedes-Benz 229.5 or 229.51 (0W-40 or 5W-40 fully synthetic)

Transmission Service

AMG's 7-speed MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) and 9-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmissions are marketed as sealed-for-life units. As with BMW, we recommend a transmission fluid service at 60,000–80,000 km intervals for Melbourne driving conditions.

Brake System

AMG vehicles come with larger, more powerful brakes than standard Mercedes models. The compound brake discs and high-performance pads wear differently and require inspection at every service. AMG-specific brake fluid (with a higher wet boiling point) should be used and replaced every 2 years.

Cooling System

The M177/M178 V8 biturbo engine runs hot. The cooling system — including the separate transmission oil cooler and differential cooler on 4MATIC models — should be inspected at every service and the coolant replaced every 4 years.

Common AMG Issues to Watch For

C63 (W205, 2015–2021):

  • Oil consumption — the M177 engine can consume oil between services; check level regularly
  • Rear differential wear — particularly on track-driven vehicles
  • Exhaust flap actuator failure
  • G63 (W463A, 2018+):

  • Transfer case fluid — often overlooked, should be changed every 60,000 km
  • Air suspension compressor wear
  • Carbon buildup on intake valves
  • A45/CLA45 (M139):

  • The M139 is the world's most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine. It requires strict adherence to oil change intervals
  • Intercooler water spray system maintenance
